Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Very rare antique Mount Washington dimensional rose and berry bouquet magnum paperweight. A striking aubergine and white-shaded rose, its crenulated petals cascading from a bourgeoning yellow center, rises from a sturdy green stem, flanked by plump pink buds. The large bloom has a prominent crown of green leaves, with the exception of a lone pink leaf, and is flanked by trios of green leaves from which rise small bouquets. Each bouquet is centered by an emerging flower, wrapped in green sepals and surrounded by bright blue berries and pink-shaded yellow berries that wind on thin stems. The use of the upright bouquet in conjunction with a horizontal bouquet is striking and innovative, pushing the dimensional boundaries of the art form. The resulting display exudes celebratory formality, perhaps in honor of a plentiful bounty or other festive tiding. Clear ground. Discussed and pictured in the November 1955 PCA Bulletin, page 17, as part of the Mr. Nello de Facci-Negrati collection. Mentioned in the 1988 PCA Bulletin, page 18, and discussed and pictured in the 1992 PCA Bulletin, page 5, as part of the Baroness de Bellet collection. Previously sold in the Fine Paperweights from the collection of the Late Baroness of Bellet Bonhams London auction, May 19, 2010, as lot 50, and pictured on page 23. Discussed and pictured in the 2011 PCA Bulletin, page 62. Good condition. Diameter 4 5/16" $22,000—30,000

Very rare antique Baccarat 1849 spaced concentric millefiori and Gridel silhouettes magnum paperweight. A pretty pink pseudo rose cane, with a ring of white stars around the bloom further accentuating its glamour, centers four spaced concentric rings of millefiori, including fine complex canes with shamrocks, stars, bull’s-eyes, arrowheads and, at the periphery, silhouettes of five Gridel animals, the goat, horse, dog, rooster and lovebirds. The excellent design boasts a rare 1849 date cane, which confirms that the excellence of this design is the result of years of experience in paperweight making. Dense pure white upset muslin cushion ground, with bits of colored filigree visible from the underside. Diamond-cut basel ring. Diameter 3 15/16" $9,000—12,000 2

Very rare antique Mount Washington holly and berry branch magnum paperweight. Serrated holly leaves, shaded in hues of mint-green, are gathered three on top and two below a cluster of five red drupes, or berries, and rise on a matching tapered stem. The branch is enlivened with shimmering dewy-frost, a specialty of the glasshouse. The holly plant has been a western Europe holiday icon for centuries, bringing color and merriment to otherwise bleak and denuded white winters. Clear ground. Fine condition. Diameter 4 1/16" $12,000—16,000

Very rare antique Baccarat “special pattern” millefiori paperweight. A ring of white and red complex cog canes encircles a ring of green and white shamrocks, with a red and white complex cog at the apex, to create a very large central cane for a ring of seven identical quatrefoil complex canes. The quatrefoils, red and collared by opaque white, appear as a ring of twelve around a single one at the center of each cane, the latter encircled by small half circle petals and surrounded by a ban of cobalt blue. White upset muslin ground. For a similar example, see Antique French Paperweights, page 66, B81, and Paperweight Collectors Circle 25th Anniversary Exhibition 1981-2006, page 22, bottom left. Fine condition with internal flaw. Diameter 3" $10,000—15,000

Rare antique Baccarat paneled millefiori on aqua honeycomb carpet ground paperweight. A red, white and blue arrowhead cane centers three concentric rings of complex canes, one of blue star-centered red bull’s-eye canes, another of more arrowhead canes and the outer one of white and red star cogs, to create the center of a flower-shaped design, with each of six radiating petals garlanded by white cogs with seven central blue stars, of alternating red or blue complex canes like the ones from the center of the flower. The design is set into a sea of aqua honeycomb canes that flow to the base. A filigree cushion peers through the base. Paul Hollister, in The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, compared the detailed grounds of these weights to needlepoint. Fine condition. Diameter 3 1/16" $9,000—12,000 www.selman.com

Very rare antique Saint Louis red, white and green marbrie paperweight. A central complex red and white millefiori is encircled by a ring of complex green and white floret canes, surrounded by a pattern of four sections of spaced red loops, on an opaque white dome. A thin layer of clear glass encases the design. This very rare type of weight was made almost exclusively by Saint Louis and not many are known. The term marbrie is derived from the French word for marble. It was most likely chosen to describe the effect the glass artisans achieved with this design. The festooned marbrie design is believed to have been derived from an Old English decorative practice of displaying what were known as “witch balls”. Witch balls were hollow blown glass balls hung by the superstitious in their doorways to ward off evil spirits. Excellent condition. Diameter 2 3/4" $3,000—4,000

Very rare antique Baccarat millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. Two flower canes, a carnation and a petaled flower, join the animals, which are densely packed with brightly-colored complex canes on a cushion of white upset muslin. Pictured and discussed in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 112, figure 366. “These insects dazzle the viewer, the delicate archetypes of a vibrant imagination. The millefiori garland forms a decorative frame of flowers around the colorful insect.”—The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Previously sold in L.H. Selman, Ltd.’s Fall 2007 Auction 40, as lot 5. Good condition. Diameter 2 15/16" $3,000—4,000 www.selman.com
